How treatment works

Step 1:
Consult

We go through your goals, examine your bite and gums, look closely at the dental work already in your mouth, and take iTero scans. Every consultation includes a comprehensive exam and radiographs, so the plan considers what’s happening below the gumline rather than on a surface scan alone. You’ll see a preview of possible changes and learn whether aligners can handle your spacing, crowding, or bite concerns.

Step 2:
Plan

Your digital plan maps each small movement in sequence, tooth by tooth. Then we go through it with you: how many sets of trays the plan takes, how long each set stays in, what the timeline looks like in months, and what it costs in full. If a stretch of the plan is likely to run slower than the projection, you hear that now.

Step 3:
Align

You wear each set as directed, typically 20-22 hours a day, switching on schedule. Check-ins are short and comfortable, and they exist to confirm the teeth are tracking with the plan.

Step 4:
Maintain

When active treatment ends, retainers hold the result. We make Invisalign retainers here, fit them at the end of your case, and set a wear schedule you can live with. If you want to brighten the finished result, our take-home Opalescence whitening trays are a natural next step.

Can you straighten teeth that already carry a lot of dental history?

In many cases, yes. Teeth that have been crowned, filled, or replaced can still be moved, but the plan has to account for what is already there, which is why our consult starts with a full exam and radiographs instead of a scan on its own.

Teeth that drifted back after childhood braces. Relapse is the single most common reason adults ask us about aligners. Teeth straightened at 14 and left without a retainer tend to crowd again in the lower front, sometimes 20–40 years later. Because the movement needed is usually small, these cases often run shorter than a first-time correction. We’ll give you a realistic range at the consult.

Crowns, bridges, and older restorations. A crowned tooth moves like any other tooth, though aligner attachments bond differently to porcelain than to natural enamel. A bridge splints the teeth it connects, so they travel as one unit. Implants don’t move at all. None of that rules out treatment, but all of it shapes the plan, and we would rather map those constraints in week one than discover them in month 6.

Gums that have already receded. This is exactly why Dr. Batista-Rodriguez moves teeth slowly. Pushing teeth quickly raises the risk of gum recession and root resorption, and a mouth that has already lost gum height has less margin to give away. We check your gum health before anything starts, and active gum disease gets treated first, because moving teeth through inflamed tissue is not safe.

Trays that come out for cleaning. Removable aligners keep hygiene simple, which matters more than it sounds when recession has opened spaces between teeth or when hands are less steady than they used to be. Trays out, brush and floss the way you always have, trays back in.

Retainers, for good this time. Teeth drift throughout life, at every age. The relapse that brings people back to us at 60 is the same process that undid their teenage braces, and the fix is a retainer you keep wearing. We’ll tell you honestly how often.

Good questions, honest answers

Am I a candidate for clear aligners?

Many spacing, crowding, and mild bite concerns respond well to aligners. We evaluate your bite, your gums, the bone supporting your teeth, and your goals before confirming that this is the right approach. Severe bite problems and cases needing surgical correction are outside what aligners can do, and we will say so plainly if that is what we find.

Am I too old for Invisalign?

There’s no upper age limit. What matters is the health of your gums and the bone holding your teeth. Teeth respond to gentle pressure at 70 the same way they do at 20, though treatment often moves at a more measured pace when there is recession or a long restorative history to work around.

I had braces as a teenager, and my teeth moved back. Can aligners fix that?

Usually. Post-orthodontic relapse is one of the simplest cases we see, because the teeth are being asked to return to positions they have held before. Lower front crowding is the classic version. The scan at your consult will show us how much movement is involved and how long it should take.

How long does treatment take?

Most cases run from several months to about a year. Your timeline depends on how far the teeth have to travel, how consistently you wear the trays, and how cautiously we need to move given your gum and bone health.

Will aligners affect my speech?

Most patients adjust within a few days. The trays are thin and custom-fitted, so any lisp tends to be brief and mild. Reading aloud for a few minutes a day speeds it up.

Do aligners hurt?

You may feel light pressure for a day or two after switching to a new set. That pressure is the movement happening. It’s a different sensation from the soreness people remember from metal braces, and it fades as the tray settles in.

What does Fort Myers Invisalign cost, and will insurance or Medicare help?

Cost depends on how far your teeth need to move and how many sets of trays the plan requires, so we quote after the consultation instead of posting a range that would not apply to you. Medicare doesn’t cover orthodontic treatment, clear aligners included. Some dental plans carry an orthodontic benefit, though plenty limit it to dependents under a set age, so the wording of your specific plan is what decides it. We file the claim for you, and CareCredit is there if monthly payments suit you better.
